| Darío López, a
mexican photographer and photo editor of teh agency A.P. in Brazil covered
in Chile the first reactions to the detention of the ex-dictator Augusto
Pinochet in October 1998His photographs show two sides of the same event,
on one side the unconditional support the dictator had from the "pinochetistas"
who are the right wingær and extreme right wing Cilens, and ont the
otherside the energetic condemnation and demands of tiral and punishment
from the human rights activists and the families of the dictaror´s
victims. Two opposite points of view that testify to the huge distance coverede
int the few weeks the defense of human rights at an international level. It
seems to be remaining behind the years in which dictators of all types,
with different titles such as president, general or revolutionary, could
commit whatever type of atrocity against people of theirs own nation before
the virtual international indifference.
